Is My City the Cause of My Photography Slump?
I’ll start by saying Providence, Rhode Island has always been my favorite place to shoot in. It’s my hometown and where I fell in Love with street photography. I’ve created what I consider to be my best work out here so it’s been tough to admit that I’ve been in a huge slump in these same streets. The empty and quiet moments my city provides that usually leave me wanting to dig deeper for those better images have recently left me more uninspired than ever before. I tend to go through this rut every year and after a few months, the feeling dissolves and I’m back in my zone but this time it's lasting longer than ever. The only time my vision becomes clearer and I begin to really enjoy the process again is whenever I’m shooting out of my city as of late. I recently took a vacation to the Dominican Republic (the motherland!) with my family and it was the most excitement I felt about street photography since my last trip to New York back in December. Something has to change!
So what’s the solution? I’m going to be more strategic with my sessions and go out when the city is more active. I’m realizing most of my attempts are on days that I’m free which is throughout the weekdays and that’s when things are the slowest around here. Next, I plan on writing down a list of the events going on in the city to make sure I take advantage of those moments where there is a lot more action happening. Lastly, I’m going to start making a schedule and force myself to shoot even on the days I’m not in the mood because just like exercising, the important thing is getting your reps in. Hoping to break ground before my birthday on June 4th less than a month a way. If you’re going through the same thing, feel free to hit me through IG and maybe we can help each other out. Till then, here’s a few images I enjoy from last year. Thanks for reading!
